High School Students Get Feel for College Life

UT Dallas and the Hunton & Williams law firm recently held a higher-education and career workshop for about 80 students from the Dallas Independent School District.

The freshman and sophomore students, from Molina High School, are part of DISD’s Advancement Via Individual Determination program, made up primarily of prospective first-generation college students.

Dr. Dena L. Jackson, interim assistant vice president of development at the University, gave a presentation about the state-sponsored Texas Scholar Program to outline some of the options available after graduation. She also addressed the importance of college and its potential economic impact on their lives.

In another session, Matthew Sanchez, assistant director of recruiting at UT Dallas, discussed the “dos and don’ts” of filling out college applications. He also offered guidance on where to find grants, scholarships and student loan information.

UT Dallas alumna Anchi Ku, who received her degree from the University’s School of Management and is an employee of Hunton & Williams, was instrumental in setting up the event.
