UT Dallas to Host 2nd Terrorism Conference

The UT Dallas Center for Global Collective Action will host national and international scholars who are doing significant research on terrorism for an academic workshop May 21-22. This is the second “Conference on Terrorism and Policy” held at the University.

Senior and junior scholars from economics, operations research, psychology, public health and political science will present 18 research papers that explore terrorism and policy. The topics will range from suicide terrorism, to foreign aid as a tool in the war on terrorism, to the formation of terrorist organizations. 

Dr. Todd Sandler, the Vibhooti Shukla Professor of Economics and Political Economy, organized the conference.

“My intention is to make the Terrorism and Policy Conference an annual event where we will attract the best scholars working on policy aspects of terrorism from a number of disciplines to the University of Texas at Dallas. Our reach will be international in scope,” said Sandler, who also serves as the director of the Center for Global Collective Action in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences.

In addition to Sandler, UT Dallas professors Daniel Arce, Patrick Brandt, Jennifer Holmes and Kevin Siqueira, all from the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences, will present papers.

Conference attendees are coming from all over the world to participate. They will represent institutions such as the University of Alabama, the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, New York University, the Rand Corp., the University of Maryland, the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, Yale University, University of Toulouse, the University of Surrey, the University of Thessaly and the University of Navarra.

The best papers will be refereed for possible inclusion in special issues of the Journal of Conflict Resolution, an interdisciplinary journal of social scientific research and theory on human conflict.

About the UT Dallas Center for Global Collective Action

The center coordinates research and educational efforts in the study of global collective action – situations in which two or more countries must coordinate actions to achieve a mutually desirable outcome that cannot be achieved by either country acting alone. 

Global collective actions include problems such as curbing ozone shield depletion, standards of financial practices, eradication of diseases, control of greenhouse gas emissions, elimination of transnational terrorism and the determinants of foreign assistance. 

The center works to identify mentors and to assemble researchers on these problems, to conduct workshops and short stays for scholars in residence and to advance publication of publicly beneficial research on these topics.
