Dr. Sandra Chapman, chief director of the Center for BrainHealth and a professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, has been named one of the Top 25 Changemakers in the Dallas area as part of the Dallas Business Journal’s 2009 Women in Business Awards.
“Through her outstanding leadership, vision and profound passion, she has achieved tremendous success with research initiatives and programs in understanding, protecting and healing the brain,” said Pagett Gosslee, director of development and alumni relations for the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, who nominated Chapman.
“By raising awareness of the research being done at the center and elsewhere, she is expanding our knowledge of the brain at a critical time.”
In the two years since the Center for BrainHealth opened at its Mockingbird location, Chapman has grown the team of brain scientists and research clinicians from 26 to more than 125, attracting world-class scientists from the best institutions, including Johns Hopkins, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Stanford and NIH.
“I am in a field that is changing and advancing exponentially. I like to think years ahead of what I envision the Center for BrainHealth to be 10-20 years out and then work backwards to achieve that change,” said Chapman.
This is the second year of the Dallas Business Journal’s Women in Business Awards, and the Top 25 Changemakers category is new. It recognizes women business leaders who are affecting significant change in their companies, industries and communities. The committee was looking for influential executives who have achieved positive results by running with new ideas and implementing new strategies.
The Dallas Business Journal received close to 400 nominations for this year’s awards. An awards luncheon will be held on Thursday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the InterContinental Dallas Hotel. All honorees will also be featured in the Friday, July 17, issue of the Dallas Business Journal.
Chapman says she is honored to be selected as one of the first “changemakers” and offers the following advice to other women executives, “Be bold, insightful, enthusiastic and compassionate; believe in and question yourself; and mentor other women executives.”
