Fall Performance Schedule Expands Boundaries

As students return to UT Dallas ready for the fall semester, the School of Arts and Humanities readies its venues and performers for an eventful fall season.

Fall season highlights include:

• Theater series opening with The Book of Liz, Oct. 1-10, written by Amy and David Sedaris, directed by Kathy Lingo.
• SOLI Ensemble’s Oct. 2 performance of Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and the UT Dallas debut of Professor Robert Xavier Rodriguez’ Les Niais Amoureux and Musica, por un tiempo.
• Father-son classical guitar duo Raul and Daniel Olmos on Oct. 16.
• Jazz trombonist John Fedchock with the UT Dallas Jazz band on Nov. 20.
• Israeli choreographer Renana Raz in an 11-week residency, which culminates in performances Dec. 4 and 5.

The season includes the inaugural Arts and Humanities lecture series with author Rick Bass on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Bass’ latest work, The Wild Marsh, was described recently by The Dallas Morning News as “a book for those who love the idea of a wilderness, even without ever seeing one.”

“This year’s series, especially the increase in lectures, both reflects and advances our intention to make UT Dallas a major cultural force in the greater Dallas region,” said Dennis Kratz, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities.

Those familiar with the Arts and Humanities season can look forward to annual traditions, such as:

• The 14th annual Sounds of Class outdoor campus-community event on Sept. 26.
• The Musica Nova ensemble on Dec. 4.
• The 33nd annual Holiday Sing on Dec. 12.

UT Dallas students are a major part of each events season. Students will be practicing their art and exhibiting at least once a month during the fall semester at such events as the Say Anything art exhibition, Aug. 21-Sept. 19, and the Best of Broadway II choral concert Nov. 6-7.

“You won’t want to miss our great student performances this fall,” said Kathryn Evans, associate dean for the arts. “From Broadway tunes to jazz standards to modern dance to impressive art exhibitions, our series also give our students a chance to shine.”

The School of Arts and Humanities hosts events throughout the year to give students access to the arts, no matter what their majors, and to promote the arts and humanities in the Dallas area.
