Director to Coordinate University Events

The University of Texas at Dallas has appointed Judy Barnes its new director of University events.

Barnes reports to President David E. Daniel and began work Jan. 27. Her major responsibilities include working with the offices of Communications and Development and Alumni Relations to manage events; and coordinating key traditions, including the University’s biannual, multi-day graduation ceremonies.

Barnes comes to UT Dallas from Electronic Data Systems, recently acquired by Hewlett-Packard. Her 25-year tenure at EDS included positions in the company’s marketing, training, human resources and events management business units. Most recently, she managed large-scale corporate incentive programs, marketing initiatives and executive events, including six annual board meetings.

Daniel thanked the search committee, led by Michael DeFrank, assistant vice president for corporate and foundation relations, for its successful effort.

“The University continually strives to tell its story better, and one of the ways we do this is by having events,” said Daniel. “Through events, future students, government representatives and corporate partners get a glimpse of our University. Alumni reconnect with their Comet roots by revisiting campus and interacting with current students and faculty. High-quality events generate excitement about what is happening here at UT Dallas, which helps fuel our growth.”

Barnes stood out because of her success in managing top-level events for the board and several chief executives at EDS, DeFrank said..

“Judy brings leadership, expertise and direction in the planning and execution of small and large-scale events,” said DeFrank. “She shares the vision of what this University can become and will shape our events in a way that reflect the dynamic growth and development of UT Dallas.”

 Barnes earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Texas A&M-Commerce.

Barnes succeeds Judi Hensley, who is retiring after 26 years of service to the University.
