UT Dallas Makes a Healthy Showing in Contests

UT Dallas students excelled last month in competitions held by the National Leadership Conference of the Health Occupations Students of America.

The students won four first-place medals in the individual and group events, as well as medals for one third-place showing and one fourth-place.  It is the second year that UT Dallas has advanced to the national competition.

The competition was in the downtown Dallas Sheraton hotel.  Some of the competitors that UT Dallas students faced were working veterans of the health care industry.

The top-placing UT Dallas students and their events were:

• Deepthi Vuppala – first place, human growth and development.
• Sara Watson – first place, concepts of health care.
• Shubham Manchanda – first place, medical math.
• Devansh Trivedi, Priyank Dhar, Kourosh Zakeri – first place, biomedical debate.
• Rebekah Joseph – third place, extemporaneous speaking.
• Gizem Engur, Karan Patel – fourth place, creative problem solving.
• Mishelle Kochumuttom – ninth place, pathophysiology.

The UT Dallas Health Professions Advising Center endorses participation in the Health Occupations Students of America.  The national organization enriches student interest in health care through exposure to health professions, volunteer events, and medical-based competitions.

It has more than 90,000 members and 2,600 secondary and post-secondary chapters in 44 states.

Texas has the largest membership with over 14,000 members in 467 chapters (459 secondary, and 8 post-secondary).
