Undergraduate Research Applications Sought

University of Texas at Dallas students’ research can receive funding as the Undergraduate Research Scholar Award Program returns for a second year.

The awards pay $500 to students and $300 to faculty members to cover project-related expenses such as equipment and travel. The awards will be made on a competitive basis, and the research can be in any field as long as it focuses on a serious, credible topic and has faculty supervision.

“We want to challenge our undergraduates,” said Bruce Gnade, vice president for research at UT Dallas, “and provide them with some of the experiences that are common among graduate students.”

The applications will evaluated by senior faculty members and will be evaluated based on the research topic, proposal quality and faculty adviser commitment. Applications are due at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6.

When the project is finished, students must submit one-page summaries and present their findings in a poster competition during the spring 2009 semester. Faculty sponsors must certify each project’s completion.

The program started in 2007 with 21 students receiving awards. This year’s program is being supported in part by Tektronix and Raytheon, who have each donated $5,000 to support the Undergraduate Research Scholar Award Program.

“It is a sign of the quality of our students’ work,” Gnade said. “It also is a sign of the value of this experience to our students when they look for careers.”

The Office of the Vice President for Research and the Office of Undergraduate Education are sponsoring this program.
