Benjamin Dower, president of UT Dallas’ Student Government, has been elected chair of The University of Texas System Student Advisory Council.

As chair, Dower will be responsible for presiding over Student Advisory Council meetings, calling executive sessions when needed, casting tie-breaker votes and attending Regent meetings when necessary.

With his term as student body president coming to an end in May, Dower said he is excited about the appointment.

“As chair of UT System Student Advisory Council, I can spend my senior year working to improve UT Dallas and the UT System in a way that is different from anything I have done before,” he explained. “I’m particularly excited to learn more about the other UT institutions and how my experience here relates to the broader perspective.”

The UT System Student Advisory Council was established in 1989 to represent student interests at UT System schools to the Board of Regents. Each UT institution has two representatives on the council, and the group meets three times per year in Austin. During the meetings, representatives are split into four committees: academic, financial/legislative, campus life and medical/graduate.

As chair, Dower is part of the Student Advisory Council Executive Board, which includes elected officers from the council.
