A group from UT Dallas will present a talk on the changing theory behind the design and operation of college student unions at a conference this week in Anaheim, Calif.
The program is titled “The Post-racial, Global, Intercultural Student Union: A Modern View of the Student Union as Community Center.”
The UT Dallas workshop will examine the transformation of the Student Union, as it evolves from the traditional notion as the “living room” of the campus, to a more inclusive idea of a community of interconnected indviduals.
The presenters are Phyllis Blanck, associate dean of students; Delvora King, events coordinator; and Homer Salazar, building coordinator.
The three will present their talk at the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) annual conference. ACUI is a membership organization that supports the work of college union and student actvities professionals in the field.
The three presenters among them have over 32 years experience in work with student unions, much of it at UT Dallas.
The UT Dallas Student Union was built in 1981 and has had two additions since then. The 70,000-square-foot facility houses a variety of services and departments, as well as the many student organizations on campus. The building is also home to the Pub and will soon be connected to the new UT Dallas dining hall.

Game tables were cleared from the first floor to accommodate a crowd gathered to hear Chelsea Clinton, who visited in 2008 to campaign for her mother, Hillary.
