The former Learning Resource Center has joined forces with the Office of Student Success and Assessment to help UT Dallas students hone their skills in key subject areas.

Collectively referred to as the GEMS Center, the staff’s offices and related services are located within the Conference Center.

The GEMS Center team provides individual appointments, group workshops, short and semester-length courses, and other strategies to help students achieve their educational goals.

As it evolves, the GEMS Center will serve at least two primary functions:  as a one-stop academic support and enhancement center, and as the hub for implementing and assessing the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

The QEP is an important component of the University’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges reaffirmation process.  It describes an in-depth, focused five-year initiative that was developed to enhance student learning on campus.

Gateways to Excellence in Math and Science — the GEMS from which the center’s name is taken — grew out of a yearlong discussion by faculty, students and administrators about how the University could directly improve student learning outcomes in math and science. 

The mission of GEMS is to ensure opportunities for academic success and to enhance the quality of student learning in math and science gateway courses by providing students with innovative, intensive and effective learning opportunities.   

The Learning Resource Center was previously located on the second floor of the McDermott Library.  All students enrolled at UT Dallas are eligible to use the GEMS Center.  Students may contact the center by calling 972-883-6707, or visiting the center’s Web site.

A Multi-Faceted Approach

 

The GEMS Center team provides individual appointments, group workshops, courses and other strategies to help students achieve their educational goals:  

  • The Writing Center (CN 1.302), which offers one-on-one assistance with writing assignments and general writing skills. Appointments are required.
  • The Math Lab (in the GEMS computer lab, CN1.206), which gives short-term and semester-long support for a variety of math courses.  Students may drop in or visit the lab on a regular basis.
  • Supplemental Instruction and Peer Led Team Learning, which offers facilitated group study sessions in concert with many UT Dallas courses.  Students should also check with the GEMS Center for availability of individualized tutoring in specific subjects.
  • College success and developmental math, writing and reading classes.
  • Test preparation courses and workshops for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT and THEA.
