The American Association of Medical Colleges predicts that the nation will face a shortage of at least 125,000 medical doctors by 2025.

UT Dallas’ Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) is doing its part to mitigate the trend. During the 2008-2009 academic year, a record-setting 101 UT Dallas students were successfully admitted to medical and dental schools.

“UT Dallas had more students accepted into medical and dental schools than at any other point in the University’s history,” said Dr. J. Scott Wright, director of the Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) and associate dean for undergraduate education. “It is nice to see UT Dallas recognized by the professional schools as an excellent school from which to choose their new students.  I am very pleased by the attention that our students are getting in the admissions process.”

Of the students identified by the HPAC committee as “well-qualified,” almost 90 percent were admitted to a professional school. The overall University admission percentage is about 60 percent, as compared to a national admission rate of only 40 percent.

“I am so grateful to have had HPAC guide me through the application process, which felt like a yearlong marathon. Without their support, my application packet would not have been as solid as it was,” said Khoan Vu, a UT Dallas biochemistry and molecular biology graduate and first-year medical school student at UT Southwestern from Colleyville, Texas.

HPAC was created in 1999 to increase the services UT Dallas offers to pre-health students. For students interested in pursuing health-related careers, such as dentistry, medicine, pharmacy or optometry, HPAC provides the tools and information necessary for professional school and health career preparation.
