Dr. Kurt J. Beron, professor of economics and public policy at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), has been appointed to the Research Committee of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the governing body of college sports.
The appointment, made by the organization’s governing board of university presidents, is for four years, beginning September 1, 2006.

The 10-person Research Committee oversees all research initiatives involving athletics at the NCAA’s more than 1,000 member schools at the Division I, II and III levels. Most recently, the committee was instrumental in the association’s adoption of a comprehensive academic reform package designed to improve the academic success and graduation of all student-athletes. The centerpiece of the reform package is a new academic measurement for sports teams, known as the academic progress rate. Other ongoing studies being conducted by the committee are focused on gambling and drug use among student-athletes.
For the past five years, Beron has served as UTD’s NCAA faculty athletics representative, the university’s liaison with the sports body. He is a member of the faculty in the School of Social Sciences, where he teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level in economics and econometrics, public policy and public affairs. He also teaches statistics courses in the School of Management’s Global Leadership Executive MBA Program. Beron received a Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
