Dr. Kurt J. Beron, professor of economics and public policy at The University of Texas at Dallas, has been appointed chairman of the research committee for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the governing body of college sports.

His appointment begins in September 2008 and will run for two years. Beron already serves on the 10-member committee. For the past seven years, he has served as the university’s faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.

The research committee conducts research for all of the NCAA’s Division I, II and III level schools. Most recently, the committee’s research has focused on substance abuse among college athletes and the prevalence of gambling in college sports.  Beron says an update to a previous NCAA gambling study will be done this spring.

Beron is a faculty member in the School of Economics, Political and Policy Studies, where he teaches courses in economics, econometrics, public policy and public affairs. He also teaches statistics in the School of Management’s Global Leadership Executive MBA program.  Beron received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
