RICHARDSON, Texas (May 19, 2003) – Academic research papers authored by faculty members at The University
of Texas at Dallas (UTD) are among the top five most-cited papers published in the 50-year history
of the influential journal Management Science.
Dr. Rajiv Banker and Dr. Frank Bass, members of the
faculty of UTD’s School of Management, wrote papers ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, on Management
Science’s most-cited list, compiled recently in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the journal’s
founding. UTD was the only university to have the work of two of its people in the top five.
The frequency with which academic papers are cited
is one indication of the degree of influence the work has among scholars and other experts.
“Receiving such recognition from a leading research
journal like Management Science is both a high honor for professors Banker and Bass and a strong
indicator of the strength and quality of the School of Management faculty and the importance of the
research they pursue,” said Dr. Hasan Pirkul, Caruth Professor of Management Information Systems
and dean of the School of Management.
Banker’s paper, co-authored with two colleagues in
1984, introduced what is known as the “Banker-Charnes-Cooper model” for efficiency analysis.
Bass’ paper, written in 1969, introduced the “Bass model” of product diffusion and is the
only marketing paper in the list of top ten papers.
The Management Science rankings come less than six
months after the magazine OR/MS Today ranked the UTD School of Management sixth worldwide in research
productivity in certain critical areas over the last six years. OR/MS Today is the membership publication
of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, the premier academic society for
management science.
In addition, during the past year, two UTD finance
professors won “best paper” awards from prestigious finance journals – the Journal of Financial
Economics and the Journal of Finance.
Banker holds the Ashbel Smith Chair in Accounting
and Information Management. He is regarded as one of the most prolific and influential interdisciplinary
researchers in the field of management and is a leader in analytical modeling and statistical analysis
of data collected from companies to address complex or emerging problems of importance to managers.
Banker received a doctorate in business administration from Harvard University.
Bass, who is Eugene McDermott University of Texas
System Professor of Management, is a leading operations research theoretician and practitioner. He
has won numerous awards for his research, including the Richard D. Irwin/American Marketing Association
Distinguished Marketing Educator Award in 1990. Additionally, the Institute for Operations Research
and Management Sciences has created an award in his name, the Frank M. Bass Dissertation Paper Award.
Bass received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois.
The School of Management is the largest of UTD’s seven
schools, with an enrollment that has increased 80 per cent over the last six years to more than 4,300
students. Within months, the school is expected to move into a new, 203,000-square-foot building
now nearing completion on the university’s campus in Richardson. The new building will feature classrooms
with state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment, wireless connectivity, video-conferencing facilities,
a computer lab, faculty offices, meeting rooms and an executive education center.
