The University of Texas at Dallas has appointed John Hanan to the position of managing editor for the Communications Department.
He will help the department broaden its reach by launching an email news report and News Center site for the University’s Web site. He will report to Susan Rogers, vice president for communications.
“We’re extraordinarily lucky to have the benefit of John Hanan’s experience and understanding of the news business as well as his unique appreciation of the uses of strategic communication in an organizational setting,” said Susan Rogers, vice president for communications. “We look forward to using News Center to tell the UT Dallas story more effectively.”
Before his UT Dallas hiring, Hanan worked 24 years in the Texas journalism world, the last 18 of them at The Dallas Morning News. As deputy copy chief, he supervised production of financial pages for the newspaper’s Business section, where he worked for the last five years. He also had been an occasional consumer electronics writer.
“This campus is a journalist’s dream,” Hanan said. “There are fascinating people and research projects under way in every single department. News Center can help them get the attention they deserve.”
Hanan started work in the newspaper industry as a writer for the daily newspaper in Abilene, Texas. After a stint as a reporter in Conroe, he was asked to lead the news staff as city editor of that suburban Houston community newspaper.
He hired on at The Dallas Morning News in 1988 as a copy editor and headline writer for the newspaper’s front page and National, International and Metro sections. He later accepted a promotion to the general news deputy chief job and later was asked to fill the same role for the Business Department.
Hanan holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He is currently pursuing studies to earn a master’s in business administration.
