Rebecca Jackson won both of her matches against Hardin-Simmons University to help UT Dallas win the American Southwest Conference championship. She was named the tournament’s MVP.

The University of Texas at Dallas women’s tennis team claimed its second straight and third overall American Southwest Conference (ASC) championship on May 8 with a 5-1 win over Hardin-Simmons University.

The Comets (12-3) are one of eight regional hosts for the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championship on May 14-16 at the UTD Tennis Complex. UT Dallas will play Washington University in St. Louis at 11 a.m. Friday in the second round, while Southwestern University will face the winner of a first-round matchup between Millsaps College and the University of Northwestern-St. Paul. The national finals will be held May 24-26 at the Champions Club Tennis Complex in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In the ASC finals, tournament MVP Rebecca Jackson clinched the title for the Comets with her 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 5 singles match. She and teammate Saumya Vedula also won their No. 2 doubles match. Kathy Joseph scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles, and she and Samantha Wong picked up an 8-5 win for UT Dallas in the No. 1 doubles match. No. 4 singles player Suzuka Nishino also won her match, 6-4, 6-2.

Joseph, Nishino and Vedula joined Jackson as All-ASC selections.

The Comets won their first ASC title in 2013 and claimed the league crown again in 2019. The ASC did not hold a tournament last year due to COVID-19.

Women’s Golf Team Begins NCAA Play

Hot off the program’s first conference title, the ninth-ranked UT Dallas women’s golf team opened play May 11 in the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championships at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers Golf Courses.

The Comets were in ninth place, and Melissa Lager was tied for eighth individually after the first round. The tournament will conclude on Friday.

Baseball Team Hosts ASC Title Series

Marcos Villegas smashed a two-run homer in the Comets’ 9-6 win over Concordia University Texas on May 8, helping lift UT Dallas into the ASC championship series.

The UT Dallas baseball team will play East Texas Baptist University in the best-of-three ASC championship series May 13-15 starting at 2 p.m. Thursday at the UTD Baseball Field. Game 2 will start at 2 p.m. Friday. If necessary, Game 3 will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Comets are making their second appearance in the championship series since winning the program’s league title in 2018.
