The Metroplex Technology Business Council (MTBC), the largest technology trade organization in Texas, has awarded UTeach Dallas the 2009 Tech Titan of the Future award in the university category at a ceremony Friday night, Aug. 28.
The award recognizes educational programs designed to address critical shortages of students interested in technology disciplines.
UTeach Dallas was created to increase the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors interested in becoming new secondary science or mathematics teachers. Replicated at 14 universities around the country, the original UTeach program was founded at UT Austin.
“This award recognizes that UT Dallas is a leader in preparing excellent math and science teachers, working collaboratively with local school districts, including Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Dallas ISD, Garland ISD and Richardson ISD,” said Dr. Bob Hilborn, head of science/mathematics education. “The UTeach Dallas program is growing rapidly and attracts the best of UT Dallas’ talented math and science students.”
The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UT Dallas won the Tech Titans competition Technology Advocate award in 2008, and the Arts and Technology Program won the award in 2007.
With 135 students involved in UTeach Dallas, from freshmen to seniors, the program, which began only a year ago in 2008, is already attracting attention from local STEM leaders in business and technology.
“There could be no technology of the future without great teachers,” said Dr. Mary Urquhart, co-director of UTeach Dallas and associate professor of science education. “Great teachers do more than prepare their students; they inspire and spark imaginations. We at UTeach Dallas are tremendously honored to receive this award, as we are honored to serve and prepare the great teachers of tomorrow.”
Founded in 1994, the Metroplex Technology Business Council (MTBC) is a non-profit organization composed of approximately 300 members that include technology businesses and providers from across the DFW Metroplex.
