Best of Web AwardRICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 7, 2004) — The University of Texas at Dallas’ Web site has been named one of the best and most innovative sites of its kind by the Center for Digital Education in the center’s 2004 Best of the Web contest and Digital Education Achievement Awards.

UTD’s Web site received third place in the higher education portal category and was selected for the honor from among numerous higher education Web sites and online applications. Two schools tied for first in the category — Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and North Shore Community College in California. Second place was awarded to North Orange County Community College, also in California.

According to Cary Delmark, manager of University Web Services at UTD, the UTD site, www.utdallas.edu, was modified beginning in fall 2003. Delmark said that the revamped site features “one click” search engine and directory access on more than 400 pages, as well as rebuilt and more user-friendly admissions, financial aid, enrollment services and international student services pages.

“Many people behind the scenes contributed to this award,” Delmark said. “The Web specialists in this department are deserving of recognition, as are the countless student workers, staff and faculty who publish Web pages, as well as the server administrators who maintain the hardware and software that allow us to do our job.”

The UTD site also was recognized for its privacy policy and its user friendliness toward people with visual impairments.

The Best of the Web contest evaluates higher education and K-12 state and district Web sites for their innovation, delivery of public services, efficiency, economy and functionality for improved student and faculty access.

Delmark will travel to New York City in two weeks to accept the award on behalf of the university.
