UT Dallas’ student-run newspaper, The UTD Mercury, continued its tradition of journalistic excellence by capturing 27 awards at the 100th annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention.

Staff members took home 22 awards for previously published works, four on-site awards and second place in the Best in Show category.

Most notably, Managing Editor Eric Nicholson and Staff Photographer Joe Chuang swept the on-site news competition, taking first in print news writing and news photo, respectively.

“Given the intensity and tough competition during these contests, I’m so proud Eric and Joe were recognized for their talent,” said Cristen Hixson, UTD student media director.

“These awards show the UTD community that it is getting some of the best collegiate news and photos in the state.”

Other top awards received by the paper included first place in editorial cartoon, illustration and photo illustration.

The UTD Mercury — which also earned first place for best in show last fall from the Associated Collegiate Press — is published on Mondays at two-week intervals during the school year, except holidays and exam periods, and once every three weeks during the summer.

The newspaper is available online at www.utdmercury.com.

Twelve members of the newspaper staff also attended presentations by professional journalists during the three-day TIPA conference and also participated in live competitions against collegiate journalists from across the state.

Established in 1909, TIPA is the oldest and largest press association of its kind in the United States.

The centennial was celebrated in downtown Dallas at the Sheraton Hotel.

The organization works to open channels of communication and cooperation among student media programs at two- and four-year colleges and universities in Texas.

Some of those media include student newspapers, yearbooks, magazines and radio and television stations.
