Dr. Erik D. Carlson, coordinator of special collections at the McDermott Library at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), will serve as moderator for a World War II veterans discussion at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 at Haggard Library, 2501 Coit Road in Plano, Texas. The event is free and open to the public.
Panelists will include James V. Lee, Dr. Robert B. Krause and retired Brig. Gen. Jim McPartin. Lee wrote a book about George C. Crawford, a prisoner of war involved in the “Great Escape,” Krause was a medic and pharmacist mate and McPartin was a B-17 bomber pilot who participated in the D-Day invasion. During open discussion, the veterans will talk about their experiences, missions and emotions related to their service in the United States’ armed forces.

“Opportunities like this enable younger audiences to interact with the World War II generation,” Carlson said. “There are very few surviving veterans of World War I, but we are fortunate to have World War II veterans like these to share their stories.”
Carlson, who oversees the McDermott Library’s History of Aviation Collection and has taught courses in military history at UTD, previously moderated a six-week film series about World War I at Haggard Library, which is a branch of the City of Plano Public Library System.
