The University of Texas at Dallas continues to rank among the top universities in the country, according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, released Sept. 13.
Among public universities overall in the nation, UT Dallas rose to 64th in the rankings, up one spot from last year. In addition, this year’s rankings showed significant gains in the University’s undergraduate programs in business, computer science and engineering.
“It’s clear that UT Dallas’ academic and research successes are being recognized nationally,” said Dr. Inga Musselman, provost, vice president for academic affairs and the Cecil H. Green Distinguished Chair of Academic Leadership. “We see those achievements reflected in the rankings but, more importantly, in how our students are prepared to succeed in their careers.”

In a ranking of university undergraduate programs in business, the Naveen Jindal School of Management saw a significant increase, from No. 67 to No. 41. The ranking does not represent a specific undergraduate degree program but includes multiple business programs. In specific program rankings, the school was ranked 16th for best undergraduate production/management programs, and its supply chain management program was listed 18th. In addition, the management information systems program took the No. 19 spot.
Dr. Hasan Pirkul, Caruth Chair and Jindal School dean, said he was delighted to see improvement in the overall business ranking and its component rankings.
“These rankings are based on opinions of undergraduate program directors and deans. As such, it is not sufficient to simply have an excellent program — this excellence has to be understood and accepted by our peers at other institutions,” he said. “I am glad to see that the quality of our students and faculty, as well as the innovations we have been introducing in our programs, are finally being recognized by our colleagues around the nation. This awareness, and therefore our rankings, will only continue to improve in coming years.”
UT Dallas undergraduate programs in computer science (CS) and engineering also saw increases in the U.S. News rankings, with computer science moving up 16 spots to No. 71 and engineering (among universities with doctoral programs) increasing from No. 79 to No. 72. As with business, these rankings include multiple programs that are considered computer science or engineering. For specific programs, the software engineering program made its list for the first time at No. 16.
Dr. Ovidiu Daescu, professor and interim department head of computer science in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, said the new ranking for the CS program is significant, particularly because of the large size of the CS undergraduate population.

“The ranking improvement for the program is an acknowledgement of the ever-increasing efforts made by the faculty and staff of the CS department to sustain excellence in undergraduate education and be recognized as one of the nation’s top computer science departments,” he said.
The undergraduate program rankings are based on surveys of deans and senior faculty members at peer institutions.
Among national universities — schools that offer undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs and are committed to research — UT Dallas was ranked No. 136 overall, seven spots ahead of last year’s position. The University also ranks third among public universities in Texas.
U.S. News & World Report evaluated 1,466 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. on 17 measures. The data include outcomes such as graduation rates, retention rates and social mobility, as well as faculty resources, expert opinion, student excellence and financial resources.
“We have a great story to tell,” Musselman said. “With dedicated faculty and staff, and some of the brightest and most interesting students in the world, there is no limit to what we can achieve at UT Dallas.”
