RICHARDSON, Texas (April 6, 2005) — In June, the chess program at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) again will offer chess camps for youngsters aged 7–13 taught by members of UTD’s championship-winning chess team.
The three camps are scheduled for June 6–10, June 13–17 and June 20–24. The programs, which will be held in classrooms in the School of Management building on the UTD campus, will include free play, speed chess and tournament games, among other activities. UTD is located just north of Campbell Road between Floyd Road and Coit Road in Richardson.
Chess has been shown to help youngsters develop reading and mathematical ability, strengthen analytical thinking and build character and self-esteem. For the UTD camps, students will receive instruction specifically geared toward their playing level, age and experience.
Members of the UTD chess team are amply qualified to teach the game — they have won the Final Four of college chess two times and won or tied for first place in the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship four of the last five years.
The cost is $195 if paid on or before May 14 and $225 thereafter. Parents can choose between morning or afternoon sessions. The morning sessions will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and the afternoon sessions from 1 to 4 p.m. Extended sessions will be available at an additional cost, and discounts will be provided for families with two or more children participating. Snacks will be provided.
Camp tuition will include a T-shirt, a chessboard and pieces, a scorebook, a medal, a certificate and a group photograph. Proceeds from the camp will benefit the UTD chess program and be used to support chess scholarships.
