Travel to and from UT Dallas promises to be smoother in the new year, thanks to the debut of a shuttle-bus service that will connect the campus with nearby destinations.
The free shuttles will start rolling Thursday Jan. 3, in time for riders to get the hang of the routes before the spring semester’s official start the following Monday.
The service, to be run in conjunction with Dallas Area Rapid Transit, will link campus with the DART rail station at the Bush Turnpike. A private contractor will operate the buses.
Current DART service to campus via bus Route 362 will continue as scheduled at least until March.
Drivers will also ferry riders to residential and shopping areas near the intersection of Coit Road and McCallum Boulevard. They will also provide scheduled transportation on weekdays between the Richardson campus and the Center for Brain Health and the Callier Center in Dallas.
The shuttles will run weekdays 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Additional service will assist students taking Saturday classes.
Schedules will be posted at the stops and online at DART’s Web site. DART will be installing signs at campus stops later this month.
UT Dallas students helped kick off the drive toward increased transportation service by approving an $18 per semester transportation services fee in a fall 2006 vote.
Similar shuttle routes serve up to 500 riders a day at UT Southwestern and Southern Methodist University.
