The Comets drove past Trinity University to a 70-54 finish and the team’s first-ever victory in a men’s NCAA basketball playoff game Saturday night.

The win in San Antonio gives UT Dallas a place among the “Sweet 16” teams competing in this year’s Division III National Championship Tournament.

The Comets will play Capital University (Ohio) in the first game of a four-team sectional playoff tournament next Friday and Saturday, March 13-14. That tournament will be hosted by John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio.

John Carroll and Guilford College (NC), whom the Comets defeated earlier this season, will meet in the other game with the two winners playing Saturday for the right to advance to the Division III Final Four.

UT Dallas made its only previous NCAA tournament appearance in 2005 but did not advance beyond the first round. The Comets went directly to the second round of play in this year’s tournament after receiving a first-round bye.

The Comets, who have been ranked nationally this season, are having the best year in the 11-year history of the men’s basketball program. They held Trinity University’s Tigers to 27 percent shooting Saturday night.

The Comets won the American Southwest Conference title last weekend and now have a 25-4 record for the season.
