Texas (March 7, 2003) – The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will present the UTD Chamber Singers
and the UTD Jazz Ensemble in A Tribute to Manhattan Transfer, a free concert, on Friday,
March 21, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.
The UTD Chamber Singers, directed by Kathryn Evans,
and the UTD Jazz Ensemble, directed by Kelly Durbin, will join together to pay homage to 30 years
of Manhattan Transfer at its very best with performances of classic hits such as “Route 66,” “Java
Jive,” “Operator,” “Ray’s Rockhouse,” “The Boy From New York City,” “Twilight
Tone,” “Candy,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley
Square,” “Let’s Hang On,” “Dream Lover,” “How High the Moon,” “Snowfall” and “Choo
Choo Ch’Boogie.”

About the Directors
Kathryn C. Evans …
Kathryn Evans joined the faculty of the University in August 1994 where she is currently the Associate Dean
for the Arts in the school of Arts and Humanities. She teaches vocal and choral music, and directs
the UTD Chamber Singers. She was Arts Coordinator for the School of Arts and Humanities from 1995
to 1998, and was appointed Assistant Dean from 1998 to 1999. She is an accomplished recitalist and
chamber musician, and performs in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area and in Europe. Ms. Evans recently completed
tours of music for voice and guitar with fellow faculty member Enric Madriguera in Austria, Switzerland,
the Czech Republic and Mexico. Before coming to U.T. Dallas, she was the Director of the Bach Society
Chamber Orchestra and Chorus in La Jolla, California and the Musical Director of the Orpheus Ensemble.
She was the featured soprano with the Opera Theatre of Washington and performed at Wolf Trap Farm
Park in Wolf Trap, Virginia. She founded and directed European concert tours of Switzerland, Germany,
France and Italy. Ms. Evans holds Master of Arts degrees in Music and in Mathematics from the University
of California San Diego. Ms. Evan’s current interests include creation of a University-based Bach
ensemble, enhancing the cultural environment at the University for students, faculty, staff and the
community at large, and creation of an arts curriculum that uses technology to enhance the marketability
of students with arts degrees.
Kelly Durbin…
Kelly Durbin is a faculty member at The University of Texas at Dallas, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble
and teaches classes in music theory, MIDI, jazz history and jazz keyboard. He holds a Master of Music
degree from the University of North Texas. Durbin is a long time member of the Marchel Ivery Quintet
and the James Gilyard Ensemble, and has performed at numerous jazz concerts, festivals, and workshops.
His professional credits include work with David “Fathead” Newman, James Clay, Chuck Rainey,
Billy Hart, Louis Hayes, Ed Soph, Lynn Seaton, Hank Crawford, Sebastian Whittaker and Roseanne Vitro.
Durbin was the music consultant and pianist for the Hollywood film “Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got
the Will?” and can be heard on recordings by James Gilyard, Freddie Jones, Wayne Delano, and
Chuck Willis.
