RICHARDSON, Texas (Aug. 9, 2005) — The School of Arts & Humanities at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) today announced its 2005–06 Classical Guitar Season.
All of the guitar concerts and events except for the David Russell concert on April 7 will be held in the Jonsson Performance Hall on campus. Russell will perform in the UTD Conference Center. All performances will begin at 8 p.m.
About the Concerts
Carlos Pérez will open the series on Oct. 14. Chilean classical guitarist Perez performs a moving tribute to Miguel de Cervantes, intertwining portions of the tale of Don Quixote with 16th century guitar pieces, many of which were referenced in the text. Perez has performed in more than 30 countries. Classical Guitar Magazine has called him “a master guitarist with true star quality.”
20th Century Greats , a concert honoring some of the best classical guitar composers of the 20th century, will be held on Nov. 11 and will feature performances by Enric Madriguera on guitar and Donald Fabian on saxophone. The program will include works by Ibert, Stravinsky and Villa-Lobos.
On Feb. 3, Goran Krivokapic, classical guitarist from Yugoslavia, will perform at UTD as part of his American tour. He has won first place in several international competitions, including the 2004 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition. Krivokapic has performed with the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the Montenegro Symphony Orchestra, the Montenegro Chamber Orchestra, the Chilean Symphony Orchestra and the Turin Philharmonic.
The 5th Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival will take place March 16 to March 18. This unique Texas competition, which is designed to showcase outstanding classical guitar students, will award $6,000 in cash prizes. Over the three-day event, students can compete and attend master classes, a performance by last year’s winners, a concert featuring Duo Stoyanova and Luis Leite and a concert by Gabriel Guillén. The activities will begin on Thursday, March 16, at 8 p.m. with the 2005 Winners Concert, featuring Isaac Bustos, Marco Sartor and Thibault Cauvin, who finished first, second and third, respectively, in last year’s competition. The 2005 Winners Concert is free and open to the public. Finalists for this year’s contest will be announced on Friday, March 17, at 8 p.m. during a concert by Stoyanova and Leite. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, the finalists will compete before local and international judges. The finals also will be free and open to the public. The winners will be announced during the evening concert at 8 p.m. The first half of the program will feature Guillén. The three 2006 winners will perform during the second half of the concert.
Grammy Award winner David Russell will bring his artistic genius to UTD on April 7. Russell has won various international competitions, including the José Ramírez Competition, the Andrés Segovia Competition and the Francisco Tárrega Competition. After hearing Russell perform, Andrés Segovia wrote to congratulate Russell on his technique and musicality.
