RICHARDSON, Texas (July 20, 2004) — The School of Arts & Humanities at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) today announced its 2004–05 season of classical guitar concerts and events.
All the concerts and events will be held in the Jonsson Performance Hall, and all will begin at 8 p.m. with the exception of the 4th Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival, which will have its own special schedule.
About the Concerts
Carles Pons, head of guitar at the Irún Music Conservatoire, will appear Oct. 22. Carles Pons I Altés is a well-known recording artist and broadcaster who keeps an active concert schedule in Europe and the Far East . Bulgarian composer Gregory Popov has said of Pons that “the delicate nuances in the musical details and the sound production both surprise professional musicians and create a response of joy and pleasure.” Tickets are $10.
Homage to Lorca: Music and Poetry by Spain’s greatest poet, musician and filmmaker Federico Garcia Lorca, with music by Lorca and Castelnuovo-Tedesco, will feature performances by Enric Madriguera, guitar, Kathryn Evans, soprano and director, the UTD Chamber Singers and a special appearance by Dr. Luis Martin, SMU Kahn Professor Emeritus of History, on Nov. 6 . Tickets are $10.
Then on Feb. 4, the winner of the 21st annual Guitar Foundation of America Guitar Competition in 2003, French native Jeremy Jouve will performat UTD as part of his American tour. Jouve displays an impressive sense of style and register and is known for taking risks musically.
Completing the classical guitar season for 2004-05 will be the 4th Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival, which will take place March 17-19. This unique Texas competition is designed to showcase outstanding classical guitar students and will award $7,000 in cash prizes to the winners. Over the three-day event, students will be able to compete as well as attend a master class, a performance by last year’s winners and a concert by the San Francisco Guitar Quartet. On Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m., the festivities will begin with the 2004 Winners Concert featuring performances by David Buck, Rade Amanovic and Edward Trybek. Admission to the 2004 Winners Concert is free and open to the public.
The festival will continue on Friday, March 18, with competition preliminaries beginning at 1 p.m. Finalists will be announced at 8 p.m. during a concert by Carlos Molina, who will perform Cuban guitar music. Tickets for the Carlos Molina concert are $10.
Then at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, the finalists will compete for local and international judges. The finals are open to the public and will be followed by the announcement of the winners and a concert at 8 p.m. by the San Francisco Guitar Quartet, whose newest CD was named among the “Top CDs of 2003” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Tickets for the San Francisco Guitar Quartet are $15.
