The University of Texas at Dallas will host the sixth annual Texas Guitar Competition March 23-24 in the university’s Conference Center.
The competition is designed to highlight outstanding classical guitar students. Contestants for this year’s event come from Australia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and the United States, and many have received prizes in other international competitions. The monetary awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
Preliminary rounds will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23, and the finals will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday. At the close of the finals, patrons and competitors are invited to attend a reception. A concert featuring the three winners will conclude the evening.
As part of the event, Spanish guitarist Javier Garcia Moreno will give a concert at 8 p.m. on March 23. Moreno has previously played concerts in Denmark, Holland, Turkey, Venezuela, Japan and the United States, and has performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Berlin and the Caracas Symphony Orchestra. The American Journal of Classical Guitar called him a “fascinating guitarist,” and Soundboard magazine praised his “magnificent interpretation and warm, attractive sound.” Finalists of this year’s competition will be announced during Moreno’s concert.
