Famed lutenist Hopkinson Smith will perform For Pope and King: Music of Francesco da Milano and John Dowland at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at The University of Texas at Dallas Jonsson Performance Hall.
The concert will focus on music by Francesco da Milano (1497-1543) and John Dowland (1563-1626), two of the most famous lutenists of the Renaissance era. Milano was employed by Popes Leo X, Adrian VI and Clement VII and performed at royal courts throughout Italy during the course of his career. Dowland was musician to King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway and later to King James I of England.
Internationally known as a leading interpreter in the field of early music, Smith has performed concerts and taught master classes throughout the Americas and Europe and has produced more than 20 solo albums. He currently teaches at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, an academy and research institution in Switzerland that focuses on early music.
According to The New York Times, Smith is “wonderfully personal.” A critic in Geneva wrote of one of Smith’s concerts, “He revealed the beauties of these works as if he were discovering them for the first time.” A critic for the Independent (United Kingdom) called his recent album, A Dream, “highly cultivated and beautifully executed.”
