The University of Texas at Dallas’ first jazz residency will feature composer and guitarist Paul Bollenback, who will give a concert and offer master classes for jazz students.
Bollenback will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 in the University’s Conference Center. He will be joined by vocalist Chris McNulty, saxophonist Gary Thomas, bassist Ed Howard and drummer Victor Lewis.
Bollenback has appeared on the Tonight Show, Entertainment Tonight, The Today Show and Good Morning America. He has played with musicians such as David “Fathead” Newman, James Moody, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Stanley Turrentine, Terri-Lyne-Carrington, Shunzo Ohno, Gary Bartz, Joe Locke, Charlie Byrd, Carter Jefferson,Carol Sloane, Steve Wilson, Grady Tate, Paul Bley, Jack McDuff, Geoffrey Keezer, Herb Ellis, Jimmy Bruno and Tim Garland.
Bollenback toured with Joey DeFrancesco for 16 years and released 14 recordings with DeFrancesco. In 1991, he was given the SESAC award for original music for two compositions featured on DeFrancesco’s Reboppin’. In 1997, Bollenback was named Musician of the Year at the Washington Area Music Awards. His album Brightness of Being was recently included on JazzWeek’s Top 100 CD’s for 2006. Robert Doershuk of Down Beat Magazine gave the album a glowing review, writing “Bollenback’s production is lustrous, his playing is exuberant.”
According to Vintage Guitar Magazine, he is “a wonderfully imaginative player” with “marvelous chops” whose “chord solo is true guitar art” featuring “wonderful intensity.” Nate Chinen of Jazz Times CD Review calls Bollenback “a remarkably versatile guitarist.”
