Rap music is a multibillion-dollar industry, but few people know the history of the culture that spawned it.
For a more comprehensive understanding of hip-hop culture and its influences on the youth of the world, join SUAAB for a multimedia presentation by hip-hop historian Lasana Omar Hotep.
The event is at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Student Union Galaxy Rooms. Lunch will be served.
Hotep’s presentation covers the environment in which hip-hop was born, its elements and the global response to the movement. The presentation will also deal with the challenges and opportunities of the hip-hop world.
Lasana Omar Hotep describes himself as a researcher, consultant and entrepreneur with a commitment to stirring critical thought about society, culture and politics. He received a bachelor’s degree with a double major in history and speech communications from Texas State University in May 1997. His areas of expertise include hip-hop history, leadership and African-American culture.
Hotep is also the founder of Hotep Consultants and works as a student success coordinator in the Multicultural Student Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
With Alonzo Jones, Hotep also co-wrote a chapter African-American Men in College on the African American Men of Arizona State University (AAMASU) program.
