Fomin, Thiem and Korevaar To Appear
March 1 As Part of UTD Classical Series
RICHARDSON, Texas (Jan. 16, 2004) — Violinist and University of Texas at Dallas faculty member Arkady Fomin will join cellist Barbara Thiem and pianist David Korevaar in Mostly Duos , a concert of the music of Johannes Brahms, Zoltán Kodály, Bohuslav Martinu, William Bolcom and George Gershwin, Monday, March 1, at 8 p.m., in the University Theatre at UTD.
The chamber music program, which is part of the UTD School of Arts and Humanities Classical Series, will include Brahms’ Variations on an Original Theme, Opus 21 #1 , Kodály’s Duo for Violin and Cello, Opus 7 , Martinu’s Duo for Violin and Cello , Bolcom’s Second Sonata for Violin and Piano and Gershwin’s Short Story .
In addition to being a member of the UTD faculty, Fomin is a member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the New Conservatory of Dallas; Theim is artist-in-residence at Colorado State University and co-director of the Music Academy at Schloss Ort in Gmunden, Austria; and Korevaar is a member of the Prometheus Piano Quartet and professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
“We are very excited to have Arkady Fomin in residence at The University of Texas at Dallas as a part of our on-going commitment to excellence in both our performing arts season and our instructional program in the arts,” said Kathryn Evans, associate dean of the School of Arts and Humanities. “Mr. Fomin has been a critical part of the growth of the instrumental program at UTD.”
In addition to appearing in the March 1 concert, Fomin will perform again at UTD as a part of The Clavier Trio on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the UTD Conference Center in a program titled “Russian Passion” featuring Shostakovich’s Trio Op. 67 in e minor and Tchaikovsky’s Trio Op. 50 in a minor.
Fomin has been instrumental in bringing fresh talent from the Metroplex to the community’s attention though his New Conservatory of Dallas, which will host two concerts next spring in the UTD Jonsson Performance Hall (JO 2.604). Violinist Chloe Trevor will perform on March 21 at 3 p.m., and Next Generation , a showcase of the Conservatory’s best young musicians, will be presented on April 18 at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the Mostly Duos concert are $15 for general admission, $10 for students of other schools and free at the door to UTD students with a valid identification.
