RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 17, 2006) — Beginning next week, students at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and Collin County Community College (Collin) will have the opportunity to work with master teachers from the innovative dance group Pilobolus Too. The joint residency program will conclude with two separate performances by the UTDance Ensemble and the Collin Dance Ensemble, both at 8 p.m., on March 3 and 4 in UTD’s University Theatre.
The groups will be lead by Pilobolus Too master teachers Matt and Emily Kent. UTD and Collin are hosting the residency in conjunction with Pilobolus’ education outreach program. UTD faculty members Monica Saba and Michele Hanlon will work with Collin faculty member Tiffanee Arnold and Pilobolus Too throughout the residency.
Created in 1996, Pilobolus Too has performed throughout the United States and Europe. The creative dance collective has been widely acclaimed for its choreography as well as its sense of humor and invention. According to the New York Times, Pilobolus Too is “a jewel-like distillation of Pilobolus spirit and history.”
UTD’s Hanlon proclaims the group “is world class and has a wonderful and distinct creative voice which the students will experience first-hand as Kent guides them in the development of a new work.” She also said “the opportunity to involve a greater community of students through our collaboration with Collin will enrich the experience for all participants and encourage cooperation in the arts.”
Kent also likes the community aspect of the residency. He noted, “First and foremost in a community project is the sense that we can all work together and make something serious out of play that is improvised. There is a sense of freedom that you can do whatever you want. It is very American that we make up our own rules and forge the way.”
