The UT Dallas Chamber Singers and Community Chorale present choral music of the baroque masters Handel and Telemann on the evening of Saturday, May 3. The concert, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre, is free.

Faculty member Hoyt Neal will be directing the Community Chorale. The Chamber singers will be under the direction of Kathryn Evan, associate dean for the arts.

The program will feature selections from parts II and III of Georg Handel’s Messiah.

Although  the oratorio is one of the most popular choral music works, only the first part, the “Christmas” part that ends with the “Hallelujah” chorus generally is performed.  Parts II and III, commonly referred to as the “Easter portion,” center on the Christian story of resurrection and ascension and portions of Revelations.

The concert will also include Georg Philip Telemann’s “Laudate, Jehovam Omnes Gentes” (Praise the Lord, All Ye Nations), with text from Psalm 117 performed by the Chamber Singers.

Telemann was the most popular composer in Germany during the Baroque period.   In 1723, he turned down the position of cantor of the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, which later went to Johann Sebastian Bach.

The ensembles will be accompanied by staff accompanist Michael McVay on keyboard and a guest chamber orchestra led by faculty member Ronald Neal.  Soloists will be Kathryn Evans, soprano; Rebecca Campbell, contralto; and Blake Davidson, baritone.
