Concert to Feature 'Bach and Friends'

Composer-conductor Robert Xavier Rodríguez, University Professor of Music at UT Dallas, will direct the UT Dallas Musica Nova ensemble in Bach and Friends on Friday, April 25. The free concert is at 8 p.m. in the university’s Jonsson Performance Hall. 
 
The evening will feature UT Dallas students Kristin Edford (soprano), Eddie Healy (guitar), Adriane Hendee (violin), Shannon Layman (viola) and Khoan Vu (violin) with staff accompanist Michael McVay and guest artist John Landefeld (cellist) performing music by Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries, along with modern works inspired by the music of Bach.  

The concert will feature the following Bach pieces:

• Trio Sonata in G Major (BWV 1039).
• “Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden” from Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid (BWV 58).
• “Ich esse mit Freuden” from Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke (BWV 84).
• Concerto in D Minor for two violins (BWV 1043) by Johann Sebastian Bach. 

The program will also include:

• Guitar Concerto in D Major by Antonio Vivaldi.
• “La Ritirata di Madrid” from Quintet in C Major by Luigi Boccherini.
• “Letter from Bach to the Town Council,” from Letters from Composers by Dominick Argento.
• Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos.

UT Dallas’ Chamber Music Ensemble provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to perform music written for small and large ensembles, as well as multi-media and theater works of all periods. 

Musica Nova guest artists have included members of the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Opera Orchestras and singers from the New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera. 

Past Musica Nova concerts have ranged from Medieval and Renaissance dances and motets to standard repertoire to experimental new works written for or developed by the ensemble.  Concerts have included an evening of jigs, an evening of tangos, French cabaret and mariachi songs, chamber opera, ballet and a fully staged commedia dell’arte pantomime.
