Classical Music and Jazz To Join Forces During Scott Walzel Concert at U. T. Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 18, 2004) — In an effort to reorient the thinking about classical wind instruments, T he University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will present faculty member and Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) associate principal bassoonist Scott Walzel in concert Sunday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Jonsson Performance Hall (JO 2.604) on campus.   Walzel will be accompanied by University of North Texas (UNT) faculty member and DSO pianist Steve Harlos.

The concert will endeavor to set aside expectations and stereotypes about wind concerts with a program that merges more than 300 years of music — from the classical works of J .S. Bach, Aleksander Tansman and Alvin Etler to the jazz improvisations of Hoagy Carmichael, Errol Garner and Charlie Parker.   This departure from standard classical repertoire, which stems from Walzel’s experience as a jazz saxophonist, will feature such jazz favorites as “Misty,” “Stardust” and “Scrapple From the Apple”.  

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are currently on sale.   UTD ticket office hours are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the door one hour prior to show time.   To purchase tickets during office hours or to make a reservation at other times, please call 972-883-2787.
