RICHARDSON, Texas (Sept. 30, 2005) — Eminent classical guitarist Carlos Pérez will open The University of Texas at Dallas’ Classical Guitar Series with a tribute to Miguel Cervantes at 8 p.m., Oct. 14, in the Jonsson Performance Hall on the UTD campus.
Pérez has performed with orchestras in the U.S., Belgium, Portugal, France, Russia and his native Chile. In solo recitals, he has performed in more than 30 countries. Pérez has won top prizes in numerous international competitions in America and Europe, including Alirio Díaz in Venezuela in 1996, René Bartoli in France in 1997, Printemps de La Guitare in Belgium in 1998, Forum Gitarre in Austria in 2000 and Fundacion Guerrero in Spain in 2000.
According to Classical Guitar Magazine, Pérez is “a master guitarist with true star quality.”
The evening’s performance will intertwine portions of the tale of Don Quixote with 16th century guitar pieces, many of which were referenced in the text. The concert will include Tres Pavanas by Luis Milán, two pieces for baroque guitar and Chacona by Santiago de Murcia, Zarabanda, Folía y Chacona, and Canarios by Gaspar Sanz, two pieces for baroque guitar by Francisco Guerau, and Homenaje and Danza del Molinero by Manuel de Falla.
