“Antiquite Moderne” to Perform at UTD Feb. 9
RICHARDSON, Texas (Jan. 23, 2002) – The Antiquite Moderne Chamber Ensemble, which includes University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) faculty member and Dallas Symphony (DSO) bassoonist Scott Walzel, will perform at UTD’s Jonsson Performance Hall on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m. Tickets are free for anyone with UTD photo identification and $10 for all others.
The program will include works by Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi, French contemporary composer Alain Bernaud, Czech contemporary composer Zdenek Sestak and German Baroque composer George Phillip Telemann. Walzel will be joined by Willa Henigman on oboe, Maria Schleuning on violin, Gayane Manasjan on cello, Steve Harlos on piano and James Richman on harpsichord.
Antiquite Moderne is a chamber ensemble made up of musicians primarily from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The group performs all types of chamber music but concentrates on that of the 17th century and late 20th century. Although the two styles of music are extremely different on the surface, each is composed in such a manner as to give certain freedoms to the individual performer, making the two periods very similar on some ways. Together, they make for a diverse match that delivers a fulfilling evening of music making and listening.
Walzel joined the UTD faculty as a lecturer in the School of Arts and Humanities in the fall of 2001 and currently directs the UTD Wind Ensemble. Walzel has played with the DSO since 1992 and previously was a member of the San Antonio Symphony, Central Opera Company, Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra..
