RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 14, 2003) – The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will host the Second Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival Feb. 27-March 1 in the Jonsson Performance Hall on campus. This unique competition is designed to showcase outstanding classical guitar students at least 16 years of age. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, and the top three performers will be invited to play in the UTD 2003/2004 Guitar Series.
The festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, with a free presentation and master class by Donald Miller. Miller is a recipient of New York State’s highest teaching award, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the NISOD Excellence Award from the University of Texas at Austin.
The second day of the festival, Friday, Feb. 28, will include a free master class and presentation by Venezuelan guitarist Gabriel Guillén at 4 p.m. Guillén is a professor at the Joseph Haydn Konservatorium in Eisenstadt, Austria, and has taught master classes and played concerts in more than 25 countries. At 8 p.m. that evening, there will be a free concert featuring top performers from last year’s event, including 23-year-old Colombian Gonzalo A. Molano, the first place winner, and Milen Parashkevov, who took third place.
The finals of this year’s competition will be free and open to the public and will be held that Saturday, March 1, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The competition winners will be announced at 8 p.m. The announcement will be followed by a concert featuring Guillen. Tickets to the concert may be purchased for $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Tickets to plays and concerts at UTD are on sale Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Art & Performance Office in the Visual Arts Building on campus and at the door of each event one hour prior to show time. About Antiquité Moderne
Antiquité Moderne is a chamber ensemble made up of musicians primarily from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The group performs all types of chamber music but concentrates on that of the 17th century and late 20th century. Although the two styles of music are extremely different on the surface, each is composed in such a manner as to give certain freedoms to the individual performer, making the two periods very similar on some ways.
