To Honor Four Alumni With Awards
RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 17, 2001) – The School of Management (SOM) at The University of Texas at Dallas will honor four of its alumni Thursday night as recipients of the school’s Distinguished Alumni Awards. The awards will be conferred by UTD President Dr. Franklyn G. Jenifer and SOM Dean Dr. Hasan Pirkul at a dinner and ceremony at the Westin Galleria Hotel.
Award recipients are Linnet F. Deily, ambassador and deputy United States trade representative to the World Trade Association (WTO); Dipak C. Jain, dean of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University; Richard Amsberry, a self-employed Dallas certified public accountant who specializes in taxation and consulting for emerging businesses; and Robert Hewlett, who is retired from careers in the oil and gas industry and as a consulting engineer.
Dean Pirkul explained that the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award is conferred to honor alumni who have accomplished notable achievements and assisted the school through work on special projects, participation on committees, or financial contributions.
“It is a privilege for us to be able to recognize these four as exemplary alumni who are making significant contributions in their respective fields and who have also been very active in their support of both the school and the university in the years since their graduations,” Pirkul said.
Not long before President Bush tapped Ms. Deily to serve in her WTO post, she had become, in October 2000, vice chairman in the office of the president for The Charles Schwab Corporation. She is a member of the Advisory Council to the Federal Reserve Bank’s Board of Governors and is past national president of the Committee of 200, an international organization for businesswomen. Last year, Fortune magazine named her on its list of “The 50 Most Powerful Women in Business in the United States.” A fourth generation Texan, Ms. Deily earned her Master of Arts degree in International Management from UTD in 1976. She now splits her time between WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and her home in California.
Dr. Jain was named to the top post of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University on July 1, 2001. He earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Research and a Ph.D. in Marketing from UTD before joining the Kellogg faculty in 1986 as an assistant professor. He is broadly recognized as a prolific scholar as well as a respected researcher and teacher. In addition to being published in many of the country’s leading academic journals, Dr. Jain serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing Research.
Mr. Amsberry graduated from UTD with honors in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, then earned his Master of Science degree in Management and Administrative Sciences two years later. In 1996, he earned a Master of Arts in International Management Studies. Today, Mr. Amsberry is a self-employed CPA who specializes in taxation and consulting for emerging businesses. He has employed numerous UTD student interns since starting his company in 1995, and he has been an active member of the UTD Alumni Association since 1998.
Robert Hewlett Jr. earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Management at UTD in 1982. Now retired, he enjoyed a successful career in the oil and gas industry before leaving his job last year as a consulting engineer for Bob Short and Associates. He is an active volunteer, lending his time to his church as well as to the Dallas Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women and the executive committee of the UTD Alumni Association. He has worked with the mentoring program at UTD and is involved in many professional affiliations as well.
