RICHARDSON,
Texas (Oct. 30, 2003) – Joey DeFrancesco, recently voted “Best Jazz Organist of 2003” by
Downbeat Magazine, will appear in concert at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) University
Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m.

Appearing with DeFrancesco will be Marchel Ivery on
tenor saxophone, Clint Strong on guitar and Andrew Griffith on drums. The foursome is together again
for the first time since the 1999 Dallas recording of Marchel Ivery Meets Joey DeFrancesco.

Credited by the global jazz community with reviving
interest in the Hammond B-3 organ, DeFrancesco gained international recognition while touring with
Miles Davis as a teenager. When DeFrancesco released his Columbia debut, All Of Me, at the
age of 17, the Hammond Organ Company hadn’t produced a new B-3 for 14 years, due to the fact that
the organ had been eclipsed by the synthesizer. But that release and DeFrancesco’s style almost single-handedly
rekindled the listening public’s interest in the classic ’60s organ trio.

Downbeat Magazine raves, “DeFrancesco is an energetic,
unpretentious, soulful, swinging virtuoso who oozes confidence. His style, though heavily influenced
by Jimmy Smith, comes across as personal and intimate.”

“The success of my early recordings seemed to
trigger a great response from those who loved the music of Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff, as well as
from new jazz fans,” DeFrancesco said. “Suddenly, the organ was popular again.”

Tickets for the DeFrancesco concert are $15 for adults
and $10 for students other than UTD students, for whom admission is free. UTD ticket office hours

About Joey DeFrancesco
Born in 1971, DeFrancesco taught himself to play Jimmy Smith’s The Sermon in its entirety when he
was five years old on his father’s Hammond B-3. At the age of 10, he was accompanying Jack McDuff, and at
16 he was a finalist in the first Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Around the same time,
DeFrancesco was tapped by Miles Davis to join a four-month concert tour. DeFrancesco subsequently appeared
on two tracks of Davis’ album, Amandla.

In 1989, DeFrancesco was signed by Columbia records
– for whom he made five albums – and began to tour worldwide. At 18, he took up the trumpet, and
in recent years he has added vocals to his act. DeFrancesco has toured as a sideman with John McLaughlin,
recorded two albums with Houston Person and has appeared at most major musical venues around the
world, including the Mellon Jazz Festival in Philadelphia and New York’s Blue Note.
