The critically acclaimed Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 in the Conference Center at The University of Texas at Dallas.
The orchestra, under the guidance of music director and conductor Daniel Spalding, is “interested in moving beyond classically restrictive performance boundaries and is dedicated to bringing music to new audiences throughout the world. Programs are stylistically diverse, offering an array of popular masterworks, newly commissioned works and unusual and less well known repertoire from around the world.”
Spalding founded the ensemble in 1991 in an effort to “combine the great European chamber orchestra tradition with the extraordinary virtuosity of some of the finest musicians from the Philadelphia area and the East Coast.” Since then, the Philadelphia Virtuosi has released five CDs and performed concerts in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Greece and throughout the United States.
Concerts by the Philadelphia Virtuosi have been called “exciting, fascinating — and fun” (The Times, New Jersey), the “fulfillment of what fine music making really means” (San Bernardino County Sun, California) and a “spirited romp … nothing short of breathtaking” (Palm Beach Daily News, Florida).
The evening’s program will feature the overture from Gioachino Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and Air on the G String and Preludio in E by Johann Sebastian Bach as arranged by conductor Leopold Stokowski. The concert will also include Praeludium and Allegro in the Style of Pugnani by Fritz Kreisler and Zigeunerweisen by Pablo de Sarasate.
