Bridging Gap Between Research, Clinical Care

Jan Lougeay, director of clinical education in the university’s School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, was recently elected vice president for research and development of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA).

Lougeay has been a member of TSHA since 1975 and has previously served as task force chair for various committees.

The newly created position was designed to make cutting-edge research more accessible to the general TSHA membership.  She will also develop programs and disseminate information to help members employ evidence-based practice procedures.

“There is often a disconnect between researchers and practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in transferring and interpreting knowledge” said Lougeay. “I look forward to helping the over 8,000 SLPs and audiologists in the state of Texas consume the literature and stay current on innovative treatment programs.”

Lougeay, of the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders, understands the time constraints that practicing SLPs face. In addition to seeing patients, the clinicians write patient reports and plan therapies. Finding time to review and interpret the literature can be difficult.

Lougeay is proud to give back to the TSHA, in which she has been a member for 33 years.

“Organizations like TSHA have a tremendous impact on practicing clinicians during their career,” Lougeay says. “I am happy to have this opportunity to help those who help so many children and adults with communication disorders.”

The Callier Center, with locations in Dallas and on the UT Dallas campus in Richardson, is one of the nation’s preeminent educational, research and treatment centers focusing on communication and communication disorders.  The center is part of the university’s School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
