Long before techno jams and hip-hop, there was a time when vocal groups with tight harmonies ruled the music scene. At 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, the Jonsson Performance Hall at UT Dallas will echo with the sounds of that era – but with a twist.
Dallas Knights will perform renditions of past popular lighthearted songs but also take the audience for a rollicking romp through original, zanier pieces from the group’s CDs.
“We try to put together the most entertaining and fast-paced package of material for whomever we’re singing for – it’s a huge variety of music,” said Michael Borts, the lead singer with Dallas Knights. “We want the audience to have as much fun watching us as we have performing for them. It’s guaranteed to be a ‘Knight’ to remember.”
Dallas Knights sing four-part harmony, incorporating many different styles including jazz, barbershop, pop and gospel with their own special flair. The group will present arrangements of works like Java Jive a la Manhattan Transfer and the soulful People Get Ready in addition to much less traditional (and funnier) fare as The Internet Song and Liposuction.
“We’re very excited that Dallas Knights will open our music season with such an entertaining and fun evening,” said Kathryn Evans, associate dean for Art & Performance. “Their skilled vocalizing, irreverent humor and varied repertoire make this a ‘must-see’ event for all audiences.”
Tickets to this updated adaptation of a melodic medium are $15; UT Dallas students may attend for free with valid student ID presented at the box office the night of the event. UT Dallas faculty, staff, and retirees; children; seniors (55+) and students from other universities are eligible for a discount. Contact the UT Dallas Box Office at 972-883-2552 for details.
