Lectures to Explore Communication Findings

The UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders kicks off the spring semester FLASH (Friday Language and Speech, Hearing) brown-bag series on Friday, Jan. 23.

The series will include presentations about hearing, speech and language topics as they relate to both children and adults.

“The FLASH series is open to students, faculty and staff who are interested in communication and communication disorders,” said Diane Garst, a clinical lecturer in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences who helped to organize the spring semester series.

“The series also provides doctoral students with an informal setting in which to discuss their latest research projects,” said Garst.

The presentations will be held in room A-221 at the Callier Center’s Dallas location on Inwood Road from noon to 1 p.m. The presentations will also be video-linked to the Callier Center’s Richardson location on the UT Dallas campus in room 1.508.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be provided.

The presenters and topics for the spring semester FLASH series include:

• “Influence of Visual Speech on Phonological Processing by Children” – Susan Jerger, Ph.D., Ashbel Smith professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Friday, Jan. 23.
• “Importance of Involving Parents in Feeding Therapy: A Program Model and Parent Perspectives” – Jenny McGlothin, M.S., CCC-SLP, clinician at the UT Dallas Callier Center; Friday, Jan. 30.
• “Incidence of Aspiration in Patients Diagnosed with Pneumonia” – Tricia Olea-Santos, M.S., CCC-SLP, doctoral student in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Friday, Feb. 6.
• “Patterns, Mechanisms and Outcomes of Personality Trait Development in Older Adulthood” – Jennifer Lodi-Smith, Ph.D., postdoctoral research fellow at the UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth; Friday, Feb. 13.
• “Development of Infant-Directed Speech Categorization From Four to Six Months of Age” – Melanie Spence, Ph.D., professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Friday, Feb. 20.
• Topic to be announced – Gail Tillman, Ph.D., research scientist at the UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth; Friday, Feb. 27.
• “Announcing CONNECT: A Web-based Hub for Anyone Interested in Communication Disorders” – Chris Dollaghan, Ph.D., professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; March 13.
• “Predicting Speech Delay in Young Children” – Tom Campbell, Ph.D., executive director for the UT Dallas Callier Center and professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Friday, April 3.
