McCall Discusses Historic Texas House Events

 

UT Dallas graduate and State Rep. Brian McCall addressed a joint meeting of SPEAK and the John Marshall Pre-Law Society on Thursday evening about one of the most historic developments in Texas politics in recent years — the deposition and subsequent election of a new speaker of the Texas House.

 

As McCall explained, the Speaker of the Texas House is a powerful position and, with the Speaker’s power over committee assignments and the flow of legislation, it is virtually impossible to depose a sitting Speaker — particularly when the Speaker’s political party is the majority party affiliation in the House.

 

As a member of the Texas House of Representatives, McCall witnessed firsthand the struggle to elect a new Speaker.

 

Elected in 1991, McCall, a Republican, has represented North Dallas, Frisco, Allen and Plano.  His current district is Plano.  His areas of legislative focus have included healthcare, biotechnology, identity theft, and tax and budget policy.

 

McCall is president of Westminster Capital Corp., a venture group that focuses on strategic acquisitions in the middle market.  He holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. He earned a doctoral degree from UT Dallas.  His book, The Power of the Texas Governor:  Connally to Bush, is slated for release in March.
